Most people assume that changing their smoke alarm battery when the daylight saving clocks wind back is enough to keep them safe. It isn’t.
In fact, relying solely on this once-a-year ritual might actually leave your property, your occupants, or your family completely unprotected.

The Dangerous Complacency of Set-and-Forget Technology
One of the biggest issues we see in the field is a false sense of security. Because an alarm is hardwired to the mains power or features a modern long-life battery, occupants often assume it requires absolutely zero ongoing maintenance.
There is also widespread confusion about the different types of alarms on the market. Are you dealing with a traditional alarm powered by a replaceable 9V alkaline battery, a modern 10-year sealed lithium unit, or a hardwired, mains-powered system?
Relying on a single annual check during the daylight saving transition creates a massive gap in protection. It leaves undetected faults, failing backup cells, or dirty sensors unaddressed for up to 11 months of the year.
Shifting to Photoelectric Technology and Smarter Power
To ensure compliant and reliable protection, we must understand how modern fire systems operate under Australian regulations:
- Technology Standards: Ensure all residential properties are transitioned to photoelectric smoke alarms complying with Australian Standard AS 3786. Photoelectric alarms are far more effective at detecting smouldering fires, which are the most common and deadly residential fire hazard.
- Replaceable 9V batteries: These still require physical replacement every single year. The traditional daylight saving reminder is still highly relevant for these older systems if they have not yet been upgraded.
- 10-year sealed lithium batteries: These units do not allow you to change the battery. Instead, the entire alarm unit must be replaced after 10 years of service.
- Hardwired mains-powered units: These are connected directly to your property’s 240V power. However, they still contain a backup battery (either a replaceable 9V or a sealed rechargeable lithium battery) that requires regular checking and maintenance.
This variation is exactly why we must shift to a monthly maintenance schedule. Safe Work Australia’s Work Health and Safety (WHS) guidelines and state fire authorities recommend a much more frequent check-in. In fact, fire authorities stress that we must test our alarms every month, not just when it is time to change a battery.
Your Three-Step Monthly Smoke Alarm Checklist
To ensure your residential or managed properties are fully protected, teach your staff, tenants, and occupants this simple, three-step routine to perform every single month:
- Testing: Press and hold the test button until the alarm sounds. This tests the internal electronic circuitry and the sounder, not just the battery connection. Never use matches, candles, or open flames to test an alarm, as this is a major fire hazard and can permanently damage the sensor.
- Cleaning: Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to gently clean around the vents of the alarm. This simple step removes dust, insects, and cobwebs, which are the leading causes of false alarms and sensor failures.
- Expiry Check: Remove the alarm from its mounting bracket and check the manufacture or expiry date printed on the back. Under AS 3786 and the National Construction Code (NCC), smoke alarms have a maximum lifespan of 10 years and must be replaced immediately if they have expired.
Evacuation Protocols and Commercial Workplace Standards
What happens when an alarm actually sounds? The response must be immediate and practised.
In a residential setting, occupants must evacuate straight away via their pre-planned escape route, crawl low under smoke, assemble at a designated safe meeting point outside (like the letterbox), and call Triple Zero (000).
In a workplace or commercial facility, the procedure is different. If a commercial Fire Detection and Alarm System (FDAS) activates, fire wardens must immediately initiate the emergency evacuation procedure, check the fire indicator panel (FIP) if they are trained to do so, direct occupants to the assembly area, and coordinate directly with responding emergency services.
Workplace compliance is also governed by different, stricter rules. For commercial premises, routine testing of fire detection systems is regulated strictly by AS 1851. This standard requires professional testing, inspection, and rigorous logbook documentation far beyond basic residential guidelines.
Additionally, modern building regulations in many Australian states now mandate that smoke alarms be interconnected. This means if one alarm detects smoke in a downstairs kitchen or hallway, all alarms throughout the building will sound simultaneously, giving occupants the maximum amount of time to escape safely.
