This course covers the skills and knowledge required to maintain portable fire extinguishers containing Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) & Synthetic Greenhouse Gases (SGG) covered by Extinguishing Agent Handling Licence (EAHL) Licence 1.
The course includes two (2) units of competency. These units, in addition to the three (3) units contained in the EAHL – Common Units Course, are required to apply for an EAHL Licence 1.
WHo's it for?
This course is for anyone who undertakes maintenance work on portable fire extinguishers containing Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) or Synthetic Greenhouse Gases (SGG). Maintenance work includes charging and recharging an extinguisher or repairing an extinguisher valve.
Experienced technicians can use the course to build upon existing skills and knowledge and validate competency.
Are there any special requirements needed to take this course?
- Participants must be employed in the fire industry or be capable of conducting routine service of specific fire protection equipment under supervision in the workplace.
- Participants require access to a personal computer or tablet and have basic computer skills to enable use of the on-line learning system.
COURSE INFORMATION
The course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to maintain portable fire extinguishers containing ODS or SGG extinguishing agents.
The following areas are included:
- Understanding key Australian standards, regulations and codes related to routine servicing of fire protection systems and equipment
- The use of tools and equipment to install and service fire protection equipment and the maintenance of service vehicles
- Five-yearly inspection, testing and preventive maintenance of fire extinguishers, including recharging and pressure testing
- Documentation and reporting of results
- Working safely including identifying hazards and risks associated with testing.
- Provides the skills and knowledge required to undertake maintenance work on fire extinguishers containing ODS or SGG extinguishing agents.
- Completion of this course, plus the EAHL – Common Units course, will satisfy the application requirements to attain an EAHL Licence 1.
- The course is self-paced and typically take 3 months to complete.
- Participants are required to complete the course within 6 months of enrolling.
- The course is delivered using a blended model of learning which includes comprehensive online training, supported by workplace-based learning in the field.
- Participants are supported throughout the learning process by our industry experts.
The course includes two (2) units of competency. These units, in addition to the three (3) units contained in the EAHL – Common Units Course, are required to apply for an EAHL Licence 1.
Some of the units in this course are also included in other EAHL Licences. To avoid duplicating units, if you need multiple EAHL Licences, or licencing or accreditation for other fire industry job roles, please get in touch and we will develop a custom plan specific to your needs.

- If you already have experience, participants can choose to undertake this course via a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway, to have their existing skills and knowledge recognised without having to undertake formal training.
- The RPL Pathway allows you to proceed directly to the assessment stage of the course. However, we support you with full access to all training material to allow you to top up or refresh you existing skills and knowledge prior to attempting the assessments.
- To be eligible for RPL, you must have a least 12 months fire industry experience
This course can be completed at the same time as undertaking the EAHL – Common Units Course or other EAHL Licence courses.
The units in this course can be used as credit towards completion of a Certificate II in Fire Protection Inspection and Testing.
