TRAINEE TECHNICIAN COURSE - FACE TO FACE

This course is the entry point for commencing a career in the fire protection industry. It covers the key skills and knowledge required to succeed and become a competent fire protection technician. The course is delivered by a mix of face to face training by experienced fire industry trainers, and through online learning.

Fire Industry Academy provides a choice of pathways to complete this course.  A Training Course Pathway and a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Pathway.

Training Course Pathway

This pathway follows a typical training course style of delivery. Learners complete lessons to attain or improve their skills before completing a range of different assessments.

The assessments include knowledge assessments to test how well you understand fundamental principles and underlying requirements; and practical assessments. The practical assessments require learners to complete a series of exercises in the workplace or a simulated environment that focus on your skills to complete tasks to industry standards.

Select this pathway if you want to learn new skills or to build on your existing skills and knowledge. The course is delivered using a blended model of learning which includes comprehensive online training, supported by workplace-based learning in the field.

Participants are supported throughout the learning process by our industry experts.

 

RPL Pathway

This pathway is for experienced fire technicians who can provide evidence of having completed the routine service of fire protection systems and equipment.  Preferably an applicant would have a minimum of 12 months experience, however more importantly they must have completed a sufficient number of service activities in a range of different business types to demonstrate competency.

Applicants are required to submit evidence in the form of completed service records and reports that clearly show they have completed the routine service work in accordance with industry standards.

They will also be required to submit a practical demonstration, such as recording a video of completing a specific task, undertake an interview style assessment with a qualified assessor, and complete knowledge and scenario type questions to demonstrate their knowledge aligns with industry requirements.

A participant must have experience servicing the fire systems and equipment covered by each unit of competency selected or included in the course.

Who’s it for?

‘Certificate ll in Fire Protection Inspection and Testing’ is for routine service technicians employed in the fire protection industry who are in the early stages of developing their skills and knowledge for a successful career.

Are there any special requirements needed to take this course?

  • Participants must be employed in the fire industry or be capable of conducting routine service of specific fire protection equipment under supervision in the workplace.
 
  •  Participants require access to a personal computer or tablet and have basic computer skills to enable use of the on-line component.

Course Information

What does the course cover?

The Certificate II in Fire Protection Inspection and Testing Training Course is structured for individuals new to the fire protection industry and working for a fire protection company. The structure of the blended Face to Face course assumes that all participants have a minimum understanding of the use of tools and equipment to carry out the routine service activities required to be undertaken for specific items of fire protection equipment.

The course will include a mixture of classroom based training, hands on servicing work and 3 short online sessions. The servicing work will require you to undertake the practical components of servicing fire extinguishers, hose reels, fire blankets, fire hydrant systems and emergency and exit lighting. The course requires all participants to undertake field work to complete workplace logbooks relating to routine service of the required equipment and systems.

How long does the course take to complete?

  • Face to Face session running over 4 days.

Three locations are available Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong.

How does the course link to Licensing & Accreditation requirements?

This course will meet licensing and accreditation requirements that have a Certificate II in Fire Protection Inspection and Testing as one of the application requirements.

  • Participants may be required to complete additional courses to meet the specific needs of a particular licence or accreditation.
  • Each state and territory government determines the licence or accreditation requirements for fire protection work in their jurisdiction.

What do I need to bring?

  • Have access to a current version of AS1851-2012.
  • Wear appropriate clothing including sturdy footwear and other safety gear.
  • Relevant tools and equipment used for fire equipment servicing (if available).
  • Laptop or tablet for completion of knowledge assessments in class.
