About the course
This course is for fire detection and warning systems designers who want to learn how to design water-based fire suppression systems including fire sprinkler, fire hydrant and fire hose reel systems.
The course is designed as an ‘add on’ course for participants who have enrolled in, or have completed, a Diploma of Fire Systems Design – Detection and Warning Systems Stream course.
Are there any special requirements needed to take this course?
- Participants must have completed or enrolled in a Diploma of Fire Systems Design course.
- Participants must be employed in the fire industry and have the capacity to complete fire systems designs and documentation for actual construction projects
- Participants require access to a personal computer or tablet to enable use of the on-line learning system.
- Participants must have access to the following software to support production of designs and documentation:
- Computer Aided Design (CAD) or appropriate drawing software
- Hydraulic analysis software, such as Hyena
- Word processing and spreadsheets
COURSE INFORMATION
The course provides participants with the skills and knowledge for a successful career as a fire systems designer of water based fire systems. The course covers:
- Creating detailed designs and specifications for fire sprinkler systems
- Creating detailed designs and specifications for fire hydrant and hose reel systems
- Creating detailed designs and specifications for fire systems water supplies
- Assessing issues relating to on-site installation and the production of specifications and supporting documentation for fabrication of pipework.
- The course is delivered over a period of 12 months across two learning blocks, each of approximately 6 months in duration
- The course is delivered via a combination of on-line learning and workshops
- The workshops will be delivered through a combination of online and in-person sessions.
- Participants are supported throughout the learning process by our industry experts.
- When completed in addition to a Diploma of Fire Systems Design – Detection and Warning Systems Stream, the course will allow a practitioner to meet the FPAS application requirements for Fire Systems Design for:
- Fire Sprinkler Systems (Level 1, 2, 3 and 4)
- Fire Hydrant and Fire Hose Reel Systems (Level 1, 2 and 3)

Course outcomes
On successful completion of this course, participants will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency:
