Fundamental Servicing of Fire Detection and Alarm Systems
This course covers the fundamental skills and knowledge required to undertake routine servicing of fire detection and alarm systems in accordance with AS1851-2012. It includes monthly and six-monthly servicing tasks.
Who’s it for?
Are there any special requirements needed to take this course?
- Participants must be employed in the fire industry and have either:
- a minimum of 12 months experience in the routine servicing of fire protection equipment or systems; or
- have experience and skills in an electrical, cabling, security or fire related job role.
- The ability to conduct routine servicing of fire detection and alarm systems under supervision at multiple sites is required. Participants require access to a personal computer or tablet and have basic computer skills to enable use of the on-line learning system.
COURSE INFORMATION
The course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to undertake routine service activities on fire detection and alarm systems and covers the following areas:
- Monthly routine service of fire detection and alarm systems including emergency warning systems
- Six-monthly routine service of fire detection and alarm systems interfaced with gaseous suppression systems
- Knowledge of fire detection and alarm system controls and components
- Identification of defects and impediments that affect system performance
- Documentation and reporting of results
- Identify work area hazards and risks associated with testing
- Identification of fire detection and alarm system components, types of systems and their general operation and function

- Provides an understanding of the basic principles of fire detection and alarm systems and interfaces with gaseous fire suppression systems, giving participants the foundation knowledge and skills to perform limited routine service activities on fire detection and alarm systems

- The course is self-paced and typically takes 3 months to complete.
- Participants are required to complete the course within 6 months of enrolling

- Completion of this course will assist participants meet the requirements of accreditation and licensing in the fire protection industry when combined with other courses.
- The course provides the technical units required for FPAS Inspect and Test category 4R (Fire Detection and Alarm Systems – Routine) and forms part of licensing requirements in some states and territories.
