Fundamental Servicing of Fire Hydrant Systems

This course covers the fundamental skills and knowledge required to undertake routine servicing of fire hydrant systems in accordance with AS1851-2012. It includes six-monthly and limited yearly servicing tasks.

Who’s it for?

This course is for routine service technicians employed in the fire protection industry looking to learn new skills to gain a promotion and enhance career opportunities. Experienced technicians can use the course to top up and validate existing skills and knowledge.

Are there any special requirements needed to take this course?

  • Participants must be employed in the fire industry and have either:
    • a minimum of 12 months experience in the routine servicing of fire protection equipment or systems; or
    • have experience and skills in a plumbing or fire related job role.
  • The ability to conduct routine servicing of fire hydrant systems under supervision at multiple sites is required.
  • Participants require access to a personal computer or tablet and have basic computer skills to enable use of the on-line learning system.

What does the course cover?

The course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to undertake routine service activities on fire hydrant systems and covers the following areas:

  • Six monthly routine service of fire hydrant systems
  • Yearly routine service of fire hydrant systems, excluding water supply proving tests or functions associated with pressure-reducing equipment, fire pumpsets or water supply tanks.
  • Identification of defects and impediments that affect system performance
  • Documentation and reporting of results
  • Understanding of basic principles of hydraulics
  • Identification of fire hydrant systems and components and their general operation and function

  • The course provides the technical units required for FPAS Inspect and Test category 3R (Fire Hydrant Systems – Routine) and forms part of licensing requirements in some states and territories.
