- This course covers the skills and knowledge required to undertake routine servicing of mechanical aspects of gaseous fire suppression systems in accordance with AS1851-2012.
- It excludes actions specific to electrical detection and control systems.
- It includes monthly, six-monthly and yearly servicing tasks.
Who’s it for?
This course is for routine service technicians employed in the fire protection industry looking to learn new skills to gain a promotion and enhance career opportunities. Experienced technicians can use the course to top up and validate existing skills and knowledge.
Are there any special requirements needed to take this course?
- Participants must be employed in the fire industry and have either:
- a minimum of 12 months experience in the routine servicing of fire protection equipment or systems; or
- have experience and skills in an electrical, plumbing or fire related job role.
- Participants should undertake the Fundamental Servicing of Fire Detection and Alarm Systems course prior to commencing this course or undertake both courses concurrently.
- An Extinguishing Agent Trainee Licence is required to work on systems
- containing ozone depleting substances or synthetic greenhouse gases The ability to conduct routine servicing of gaseous fire suppression systems under supervision at multiple sites is required. Participants require access to a personal computer or tablet and have basic computer skills to enable use of the on-line learning system.

What does the course cover?
The course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to undertake routine service activities on gaseous fire suppression systems and covers the following areas:
- Monthly, six-monthly and yearly routine service of mechanical functions of gaseous fire suppression systems, excluding actions specific to electrical detection and control systems
- Undertaking preventative maintenance activities
- Knowledge of the types and operation of gaseous fire suppression systems
- Identification of defects and impediments that affect system performance
- Documentation and reporting of results
- Working safely including identifying hazards and risks associated with testing.
- Understanding the effect of ozone depletion on global warming and the application of rules, regulations and licenses relevant to the fire protection industry

How does the course link to Licensing or Accreditation requirements?
- Completion of this course will assist participants meet the requirements of accreditation and licensing in the fire protection industry when combined with other courses.
- The course provides the technical units required for FPAS Inspect and Test category 5 (Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems – Complex) and forms part of the requirements for an Extinguishing Agent Handling Licence.
