This course covers the skills and knowledge required to undertake routine servicing of fire and smoke doors and passive fire and smoke containment products and systems

Who’s it for?

  • This course is for routine service technicians commencing a career in the fire protection industry and for experienced technicians working in other parts of the industry, to develop additional skills and knowledge to conduct routine service of fire hose reels.
  • Experienced technicians can use the course to top up and validate existing skills and knowledge.

Are there any special requirements needed to take this course?

  • Participants must be employed in the fire industry and have either:
    • a minimum of 6 months experience in the routine servicing of fire protection equipment or systems; or
    • have experience and skills in a building, construction or fire related job role.
  • The ability to conduct routine servicing of fire and smoke doors and passive fire and smoke containment products under supervision at multiple sites is required.
  • Participants require access to a personal computer or tablet and have basic computer skills to enable use of the on-line learning system.

What does the course cover?

The course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to undertake undertake routine servicing of fire and smoke doors and passive fire and smoke containment products and  covers the following areas:

  • Routine service of fire and smoke doors according to relevant Australian standards
  • Routine service of a range of passive fire and smoke containment system components protecting services, structural elements or openings in or through fire compartments
  • Recognise components of passive fire and smoke containment systems and fire and smoke doors
  • Understanding the design and installation requirements for passive fire protection systems
  • Principles of passive fire protection including knowledge of fire resistance levels
  • Identification of defects and impediments that affect system performance
  • Documentation and reporting of results

How does the course link to Licensing or Accreditation requirements?
  • Completion of this course will assist participants meet the requirements of accreditation and licensing in the fire protection industry.
  • When combined with the Routine Service of Fire Hose Reels course and the FPAS Inspect and Test Common Units Course, practitioners will be eligible for
    qualified accreditation for FPAS Inspect and Test category 7 (Portable Fire Equipment and Fire Hose Reels – Complex)

Additional Training Opportunities

This course provides the skills for routine servicing and installation of fire extinguishers and blankets. Participants should undertake the FPAS Inspect and Test Common Units course prior to commencing this course or undertake both courses concurrently.
