FSA Qualified Accreditation Course for Fire Detection and Warning Systems

This course meets the qualified accreditation requirements for Fire Safety Assessment under the FPAS Accreditation Scheme for an individual that assesses fire detection and alarm systems, warning systems, smoke and heat detectors and alarms and associated equipment. The course includes a Certificate II in Fire Protection Inspection and Testing to comply with FPAS requirements.

Who’s it for?

This course is for fire safety assessors employed in the fire protection industry who need to apply or transition to qualified accreditation as prescribed in Fire Protection Accreditation Scheme (FPAS).  The course will cover the accreditation requirements for the fire safety measures listed below:

  • Automatic fail-safe devices
  • Automatic fire detection and alarm systems (level 1)
  • Emergency warning and intercommunication systems
  • Fire alarm monitoring
  • Smoke alarms and heat alarms
  • Smoke detectors and heat detectors
  • Emergency lighting
  • Exit Signs
  • Division 7 Miscellaneous fire safety offences

This course is for individuals who do not currently hold a certificate II or higher qualification in engineering, construction, plumbing, electrical, fire safety or property services.

Already hold a Certificate II or Higher Qualification?

  • Courses are available for practitioners who already hold a Certificate II or higher qualification as required by the FPAS Scheme.

Are there any special requirements needed to take this course?

  • Participants must have employment in the fire industry and have the capacity to undertake routine service and fire safety assessment of the listed fire safety measures included in the course.
  • Participants require access to a personal computer or tablet and have basic computer skills to enable use of the on-line learning system.

I’m already experienced, is this course for me?

  • Our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Pathway’s design is for individuals who have skills and knowledge working in the fire industry or via other learning.
  • The RPL pathway’s designed is to recognise existing skills and knowledge without having to undertake formal training.
  • Participants can undertake this course via an RPL pathway.
    • Eligibility for the RPL pathway is determined on a case by case basis, centred around an individual’s experience and availability of evidence to demonstrate competency.

What does the course cover?

The course provides participants with the foundation skills and knowledge to perform fire safety assessment and routine service work in the fire protection industry and covers:

  • Assessing building plans, inspecting fire safety systems and equipment and determining level of performance
  • Understanding key Australian standards, regulations and codes related to routine servicing and fire safety assessment of fire protection systems and equipment
  • Maintaining workplace health and safety
  • Ability to organise work schedules and complete tasks safely and efficiently in line with industry standards
  • Providing effective customer service including the ability to communicate issues arising from the assessment of the performance of a range of fire protection systems and equipment
  • Undertake routine service of fire systems and equipment in accordance with relevant standards including:
    • Fire detection and alarm systems
    • Emergency warning and intercommunication systems
    • Emergency and exit lighting systems

  • The course includes a Certificate II in Fire Protection Inspection and Testing. This qualification is a requirement of licensing and accreditation for routine service (inspect and test) work in some jurisdictions.
